I had a personal conversation in 2013 with 382nd Squadron Commander, Richard W. Asbury. He relayed that he squadron was stationed at Staplehurst, England from April - late June of 1944. They participated in flying cover for D-Day. In July they were moved to Paris, France. In regards to my Uncle, Carleton Evald Palmer, who was a pilot in this squadron Col. Asbury said the following; " Carleton was an outstanding pilot. There were several times during the July 13th, 1944 mission, that MEZ-109’s were on my tail and Carleton took his plane and ran between the 109 and my plane, saving me from getting hit and putting his own life in danger."
