Doreen Ballard lived in Saffron Walden during the Second World War and was friends with Audrey Paschal. Both women met and married American servicemen and moved to the United States as war brides.
Doreen married Claude 'Doc' Ballard in the spring of 1944. She moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Doc's home town.
Doc Ballard died in October 1960. Doreen stayed in the United States and currently lives in Las Vegas with her daughter. She is still in touch with Audrey, her friend from Saffron Walden.
