Archie O McDaniel
MilitaryOn 12 October 1943, McDaniel was crew chief on a CG-4A Haig Glider, towed by tug from C-47 Skytrain (serial number 41-38704) in the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations. The C-47 was flying through broken cloud, when 60 miles from Algiers the pilot felt McDaniel's glider pull three times, and come loose, causing the Skytrain to lurch ahead.
The crew of the Skytrain dropped height, looking for the glider but the could not find where it landed. Thunderstorms further inhibited their visibility.
The remains of McDaniel and his pilot Carl J Erickson could not be recovered.

Family nickname for my Uncle Archie was "Stud" McDaniel. Eldest son of Charlie J. McDaniel. He went MIA on my Father's sixteenth birthday. My father was too young to join the US Army, so he joined the US Merchant Marines. After he exited the USMM, he was about to be drafted by the USN -- and joined the US Army to avoid more time at sea. He served in the occupation forces in Japan.
