Flight of six P-39's were engaged or in pursuit of nine FW190's. When last seen Hunter had bagged one FW190 [pilot bailed from damaged A/C] and was in pursuit of a second having come to the aid of a flight mate who was being liberally peppered by the E/A. Climbing after the Focke, 500 ft below and guns blazing, when his flight mate had to pull out of the action and lost sight of Hunter, his last transmission being picked up by another of the flight "Mayday, Mayday, Bailing out over water". On return to base the squadron were erroneously told he had been rescued and was safe. 72 hrs passed without contact from Hunter before the error was discovered and a search implemented, with no sign of him being found.
