Lt. Wiano Hakinnen was assigned to 514BS, 376BG, 9AF USAAF. Co-Pilot of B-24D, 41-11613, The Blue Streak, of 514th BS, 376th BG, 9th AF. A/C went on to survive 110 missions with the 376th bomb group and was sent home for a war bond tour.
Awards: DFC, AM (6OLC), WWII Victory, EAME (2 x Battle Stars).
Obituary: Glendale - Waino Einer Hakkinen died peacefully in his Glendale, AZ home on May 5, 2018 at the age of 98. He was born in Gardner, MA on May 1, 1920. He was a World War II veteran who served as a pilot on The Blue Streak, a B-24D Liberator assigned to the 9th Air Force, the 376th Bomb Group, and the 514th Bomb Squadron. He earned the rank of Captain and was awarded the Air Medal with six oak leaf clusters for combat flight over the Middle East and Europe. After the war, on March 6, 1945, he married his wife of 52 years, Viola Nikunen Hakkinen. He moved his family to Phoenix, AZ in 1960 where he lived for the rest of his life. He had a 35-year career as a draftsman at General Electric and Honeywell. He had three children, Lois McCort, Linda Ambers, and Donald Hakkinen. He leaves 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
