Darmstadt, Germany | 24 March 1945 | Howerton was flying as Radar Operator in a P-61 when a flak shell burst in the crew nacelle under Howerton's seat. The explosion broke both of his legs and gave him numerous shrapnel wounds. He nonetheless was able to bail out. He landed in a tree. German civilians extracted him, made a litter and carried him four miles to the city of Darmstadt. |
