Fred Kidd
CivilianUploaded
Tony Kidd was a Lieutenant in the British Home Guard and a Technical Officer helping to manage the Royal Ordnance Factory at Risley in Lancashire. He also had a responsibility to operate the Anti-Aircraft gun at the Main Gates of Risley and was sent to practice on the “Dome Trainer” at Burtonwood – the day his son Fred was born. This was 5th March 1944.
Tony writes:
"A message was passed to my Father at lunchtime the same day at Burtonwood where the Officers entertained him in the Refectory and announced my birth to a thousand or more US Servicemen to much applause. He was then given a ‘large’ Cuban Cigar as a gift."
"Much later in 1996 I designed a remodeling of the “Header House” structure at Burtonwood so was able to visit there and meet the Commander of the ASU Europe Unit, pay for my own Lunch and some Hershey Bars at the Commissary in US Dollars to my delight."
