Died

El Dorado Hills, CA, USA 31 August 2011 Zohrab (Zoe) Hanisian, a longtime resident of Napa, died on Aug. 31, 2011, in El Dorado Hills, Calif., of complications from lung cancer. Born in New Britain, Conn., on Feb. 23, 1923, Zoe was 88 years old. After high school, Zoe enlisted in the Army Air Corps in January of 1943. During World War II, he flew 32 missions as an aerial gunner on a B-24 long-range bomber. After the war, Zoe enrolled at the University of New Mexico, where he met his future wife, Betty Jo Woodard. After graduating, he went to work for the U.S. Air Force as an Information Officer/Base Historian. He and his family spent the next seven years living in Morocco, France and Germany before he was assigned to Travis Air Force Base. Zoe settled his family in Napa in 1962, and after short assignments to Colorado Springs and Belleville, Ill., he and Betty returned. In 1977, after 30 years with the Air Force, Zoe retired. Zoe's parents, Zakaria and Maritza Hanisian, along with his eldest brother, Andrew, immigrated to the United States after surviving the 1915 Armenian genocide at the hands of the Turkish government. They'd been driven from their home on Mount Musa Dagh and ended up in a refugee camp in Port Said, Egypt, where Zoe's older sister, Armenouhi, died of malnutrition (she was 2). Zoe was active in the Friends of the Napa River and other waterfront conservation groups. He was also an avid gardener and boating enthusiast, perhaps best known for his home-grown tomatoes and Meyer lemons, which he shared with friends, neighbors and charitable institutions.
