William T Fairbanks

Military

Fairbanks was the commanding Officer of the 689th Quartermaster Company, the first unit of the Eighth Air Force to leave the US.

Fairbanks departed the US on 22 April 1942 aboard the SS Cathay, and arrived with his men in England on 14 May 1942. They were quickly sent to Wicksteed Park, where they were surprised by the curiosity shown by the local British people who were there to greet them.
