Salt Lake City, UT, USA | 15 August 1997 | Lt. Col. William J. Black (Ret. Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, William J. Black, passed away Monday, August 18, 1997 of heart failure. He was born August 7, 1917 in Farmington, Utah to William Valentine and Lillian Leora Backman Black. He married Elizabeth Atkin Black on March 24, 1939 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.Bill graduated from Davis High School and attended George Washington University and Oxford University in England. He was a member of the LDS Church and served a mission in the Southern States Mission. He served in many positions, including a bishopric, high council, and as a stake missionary. But his love was serving as a home teacher. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 25 years and was a veteran of World War II. He retired honorably as a Lt. Colonel at the Headquarters of Strategic Air Command in Omaha, Nebraska. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years; daughter, LeAnn (Kenneth) Isom, Centerville; son, William J. (Rebecca) Black, Farmington; 12 grandchildren; brother, Robert (Helen) Gray; sister, Jerry Fox Hudson. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lillian Simmons and beloved stepfather, Lindley Simmons. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 23, 1997 at 11 a.m. in the Monument Park 7th Ward, 1794 S. Texas St. Friends may call Friday 7-9 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 255 S. 200 E. and Saturday at the ward 9:45-10:45 a.m. Interment, Salt Lake City Cemetery. |
