William H. Wylie was a Staff Sergeant in the Army during World War II. William resided in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania before enlisting on July 9, 1943. At the time of enlistment, William was 18 years old, had 3 years of high school education and was single, without dependents. Two years later, William was shot down, captured and was sent to Dulag Luft near Grosstychow, Prussia where 647 other American POWs were held. William's capture was first reported to the International Committee of the Red Cross on January 10, 1945, and the last report was made on June 7, 1945. Based on these two reports, William was imprisoned for at least 148 days (~5 months), one of the shorter durations of captivity recorded, the average being 363 days. Ultimately, William was returned to military control, liberated or repatriated.
