"According to his resume, during his military career, Bill earned seven battle ribbons, 12 citations, and put in 5,000-plus flight hours plus another 1,000 combat pilot hours. He became a division leader, and spent three years as director of technical operations in the 8th Air Force in England, where he was also in charge of aircraft and engineering and the modifications on all B-17s in England."
