William Craig Hunter was from Wheeling, West Virginia. He proudly served in the 8th Air Force, 95th Bomb Group, 3rd Division, 412 Squadron. Stationed at Horham, England, he was a B-17 co-pilot from 10/2/1944 to 12/30/1944 and pilot from 1/14/1945 to 3/19/1945. He received the Air Medal for the mission to Ludwigshafen, Germany on 11/5/1944. On the March 18, 1945 mission to Berlin flak entered the cockpit with a fragment hitting him, resulting in the presentation of a Purple Heart. On 3/6/1945 he was assigned to plane 339177. He and the crew named it the "Blessed Event", in the event they would complete their missions. Every year until his death, he would call his crew on 3/19 (last mission) and spend a quiet day with his wife Barbara.
