Prisoner of War (POW) Shot down in B-17G #42-31673 'Lassie Come Home' while serving as Engineer/Top Turret Gunner. Aircraft was attacked by German fighters. He was able to bale out of the stricken aircraft just before it exploded in mid-air and crashed at Deiderode, Germany. Prisoner of War (POW).



Walter Carpenter, age 85, died Holbrook, AZ, January 7, 2008

As reported by his wife, Addine Carpenter, Walter was born on August 25, 1922. He graduated from Holbrook High School in 1940, and attended Arizona State Teachers College in Flagstaff. After enlisting in the Army Air Core, he flew 35 missions during World War II as a bombardier with the 324th bomb squad stationed at the Royal Air Force Base in Bassingbourn, England. He was honorably discharged in October 1945 and then joined the Air Forces Reserves, retiring as a captain in 1953. He attended Greeley State Teachers College in Colorado to finish work on his degree and obtain his teaching credentials. He received his master's degree in 1954.
