Wallace originally trained to be an aero mechanic, when a call came out for more air gunners and he was sent to Panama City FL for training as such. He eventually sailed for England January 1st 1943 and joined the 392nd BG at Wendling where he flew on 35 combat missions. In support of the D-Day landings he said there were so many ships in the English Channel ' you could walk across the Channel on their decks'.
