While on temporary assignment to North Africa, on bombing run on port at Bizerte, Tunisia, Lt. John Roche and his group of B-24s moved in for an extra close, more exact run on their target. Lt Roche's and Sgt. Shockley's airplane, Ambrose II, the B-24D-10-CO, 41-23909, took direct hits to a gasoline line. Lt. John Roche asked his crew for their choices : to try to make a safe wheels up landing on the desert floor, or bail out. They voted to try for a landing, which Lt. Roche made with three crewmen, killed in the gun battle with German fighters, and during the rough landing, which broke up, Ambrose II. Now, stranded on the Algerian desert, Roche, Shockley, and their crew spent a long cold night shooting at, and protecting, their three dead crewmen and their plane from the Algerian natives. 7 RTD. 3 KIA.
