On 10 Feb 1944, flying bombing mission to Brunswick, German fighters attacked and shot down B-17G No. 42-37971 named Herky Jerky crashed near Recke-Langenakker, Germany. Eight crew members baled out and survived the attack. However, two crew members did not make it out of Herky Jerky before it broke up in the air and died in the crash.
