Victor F Schweer
Military"Iowans of the Mighty Eighth", Chapter 22 "Biographies", by Charles D Taylor.
Working in a canning factory Victor was drafted in 1942 but not called up until after the harvest. He completed training and was assigned to the Group at Thorpe Abbotts with whom he flew of 29 combat missions and another 6 after VE Day on the Dutch 'food drops'. On one mission flak took out the entire tail gunner's dome, a moment earlier he had crawled out as his guns had jammed. On a pass to London -staying at the Red Cross Club in Piccadilly- he ignored an air-raid warning and got blown out of his bunk when a V2 landed nearby 'we never ignored any sirens after that'. He was afterwards employed by a packing company for 21 years then, with his wife, took over a local jewelry store.
