He was drafted in August 1943, trained as a gunner and deployed to the ETO in January 1945. On a mission to Dortmund 23rd March the bomb bay was set on fire and the crew bailed out. He was captured by a German soldier but heard afterwards that his pilot had been killed by civilians.
Prisoner of War - crashed near Dusseldorf in B-17 43-37635. He was sent to Stalag 11B where a lot of Russian prisoners were also housed. 'Bunks were stacked 3 high with only slats to sleep on...there were no toilets, just a hole in the ground'. As Allied forces closed in they were evacuated and one morning, near Denmark, they awoke to find all the guards gone. He returned to the USA by victory ship and was discharged in November 1945. He subsequently became a Chemical Engineer.
