Turnip Termite, B24H 41-29418: Original noseart by Clayton Hutsell 486th BG 835th SQ 8thAAF. The aircraft was transferred from the 486th to the 44th on 17 April 1944. and renamed Pappy's Chillun. It crashed in the 21st of April, with the loss of all crew except the pilot and co-pilot.
Joined Sqd 3/14/44. Killed in Action (KIA) 4/21/44 (Hamm). Pilot: Havens.
Killed when Pappy’s Chillun, B-24H #42-29418, crashed during assembly. ”It was the opinion of the investigating board that the airplane picked up too much ice, was forced into a stall, and from there into a spin, when it fell apart.” (44thbombgroup.com) The main body of the aircraft still lies in the lake at Taverham Mill. On 21 April 2001, 57 years after the crash, a memorial was dedicated on the property.
