Killed in Action (KIA) 10 January 1943. 93rd was assigned to N. Africa to help defeat Rommel. B-24D-1-CO 41-23665 'Big Dealer' had mission to La Galite (a small Mediterranean island off Tunisia). Crashed near Bir el Khamsa, Egypt. Crash may have been due to fuel shortage. 4 killed and 5 returned to action. Ted's Traveling Circus mentions that Smith was an Olympian who was a diving champion.
