Enlisted in the USAAC on July 31, 1943. Stationed at Jefferson Barracks, MO. He entered the Aviation Cadets, Class 44-C at Washington Univ. on Sept. 9, 1943 but washed out in early 1944. On June 1, 1944, after gunnery training at Harlingen, TX, he qualified as a combat crew aerial gunner. He was transferred to Mountain Home, ID where on Sept. 20, 1944, he qualified for Class I flying crew. His flight crew became part of the 2nd Air Division, 445th BG upon their arrival at Tibenham, England on Jan. 14, 1945. From Feb. 16 to April 20, 1945, he flew 13 combat missions against targets in Germany and Czechoslovakia as a gunner in Asbestos Alice, a B-24M # 44-50525.
