Shot down 11 June 1943 in B-17 #423138. Killed in Action (KIA). Initial target was Bremen but diverted to Wilhelmshaven submarine pens due to cloud cover over the primary target. According to 2Lt. Thomas B. Kelley, bombardier, their B-17 was attacked by German fighters while on approach to the target - bomb bay doors open. The plane was rocked violently and fell off to the left on fire. He and one other man bailed out landing in Jade Bay (Jadebusen). The B-17 impacted in a field near Tossen, Germany on the outskirts of Wilhelmshaven.
