Garrett was involved in a mid-air collision on 23 March 1944 on both his and the 466th BG's 2nd mission. He successfully bailed out and evaded capture, hiding out with the Bourdouche family in Queue-du-Bois, Belgium. He was accidently and tragically killed when a stray German bullet entered the home and killed him instantly. The American Army was a few hours from liberating the farm where he was hiding.

B-24H #42-52587 'Shoo Shoo Baby' crashed near Lake Belterwijde, Holland after colliding with another aircraft on a mission to Achmer airfield, GR on 23 Mar 1944.

He successfully evaded capture, being hidden by members of the Belgian resistance. He was accidently and tragically killed by a stray German bullet as the American Army were fighting with the Germans near the house he was hiding in near Liege on 9 September 1944, over 5 months from the time he was shot down.
