After fighter and flak attacks on a mission to Brunswick, GR on 29 Mar 1944, B-17G #42-37953 made an emergency landing SW of Steinhuder Lake, GR. Prisoner of War (POW).



Completed 25 missions. Flew on Alvin G. Schuering crew.



When they came down at the lakeside a crowd of civilians armed with shotguns, farm implements and clubs surrounded them. At one point ropes were thrown over their heads and the old man holding the ropes was yelling 'Luftgangster' at them. It was a very near thing but a truckload of soldiers turned up and after a lot of shouting with the civilians - who were reluctant to hand them over - took them away.

Post war he was a writer, making frequent contributions to the 306th Echoes. Robert died 25 August 2001 in New York City.
