Smith 4FG/336FS was flying a Spitfire IX originally assigned to 133 Squadron RAF but transferred to 4th Fighter Group, 336th Fighter Squadron on 22-August-1942 in escort of American bombers attacking the German airfield of Porjeau at Morlaix, France. His aircraft apparently ran out of fuel but Lt Smith was able to abandon the aircraft and managed to evade capture. He returned to England on 18-January 1943. ref. Escape & Evasion Report 7.
