during his Combat Orientation flight
with the Elmer Johnson crew in
42-97501.
The crew was reassembled later, with
co-pilot Dahlgran taking Stevenson's place
and a new co-pilot.
"Old Scrapiron" was a nickname Stevenson
earned during training, and their assigned
aircraft was named in his honor.

Stevenson was an original member of the 447th Bomb Group, and gave his name to the B-17 'Old Scrapiron' after becoming involved in a bar fight during training. He was killed during a combat orientation flight on 29 April 1944 with Elmer D. Johnson's crew, where he was flying co-pilot.
Stevenson's crew were disbanded following his death, until they reassembled with Stevenson's co-pilot Dahlgran as pilot.
