20 March 1943 a/c AL450 Boston III on a tow training flight with B24's. Flutter developed and eventually caused plane to break apart so crew baled out. Phillips and engineer Planchard suffered some injuries, but all 3 men aboard returned to duty.



The 44th BG in WWII mentions Phillips participation in the Ploesti raids with the awarding of the DSC. His group was temporarily assigned to North Africa for missions to Ploesti, Sicily and Italy. Squad records his joining the 44th on 4/10/1942 and completing his tour on 8/22/1943
