20 May 1944 | The Battlin Bitch was on a pre-D-Day mission over France. The plane was carrying a bombardier and a "Gee" navigator indicating that it was the Box Lead plane in the formation and using radar. The plane was damaged by heavy flak over the target, and the left engine was seen to be smoking after completing the run. The plane headed for its base at Earls Colne, northwest of London, near Colchester, but turned back toward France because the damage was too great. A few miles from the coast, near Dieppe, the plane was seen to go down in the Channel between 1900 and 2000 hours local. No wreckage was found, and Hamley's body was the only one recovered when it was washed ashore some time later. | |
