Philip Manning was born in 1924. According to the data in the 1940 US Census, his father, Melvin J. Manning, was a butcher by trade and had a shop in Dallas. His son Philip was an errand boy for a grocery store in the same city and he graduated from Highland Park High School, Dallas in 1941. He enlisted in the Air Corps (date unknown) and was sent overseas in 1944, being assigned as a Pilot in the 479th Fighter Group/434th Fighter Squadron. He was Killed in Action (KIA) in Nancy in P-38 #42-67296 during a strafing mission of the Nancy/Essey airfield.

18 August 1944 | Philip Manning's P-38 was hit by Flak and was seen to dive towards the city of Nancy where it crashed in the Rue Provençal, in the Bonsecours neighborhood. Manning was killed instantly and a woman who had been wounded in the crash died a few days later in a local clinic. | |
