Zagan, Poland | 28 May 1944 - 29 April 1945 | "It seems most people want to know about my being shot down and interned in prison camp. Shot down on fifth raid into Germany. Target was a Focke Wolfe factory. Flack damage and fighters." -Lt Col P. Vooz (note from personal records) ¨Bombardier and he landed in a plowed field and he carried (on his back as I recall) the bombardier into a nearby forest. Captured by civilian farmers, turned over to the Wehrmacht and then the Luftwaffe. Talked about the Red Cross parcels with their food one per week per man. Didn't sound like much food. Toward the end it was German bread and "questionable" soup. I remember him telling me at times they were making soup with whatever they could find growing, grass or anything at all. Talked about the movie and the three that made it all the way home. They continued to work on the tunnels after the big escape. Forced march in January 1945.¨ - As related by P. Vooz (son) Purple heart citation is for 29 May 1944. |
