Hit in artery while on Mission to Hamburg, Ger. Flying as co-pilot to Hughes. Just after dropping bombs, plane felt giant explosion and as Hughes looked at Peter, he saw nothing amiss until Peter's eyes closed. He saw no blood and did not think him seriously hurt. The crew all tried to keep the plane in the air and made it back to base. Hughes got Peter out of the seat with a crewman's help and laid him on the floor and gave him oxygen the whole way back to base. The Flight Surgeon said Peter only lived a moment before bleeding out.
