Assigned to 38FS, 55FG, 8AF USAAF.
"64 combat missions, 270. 5 hours. On 1st combat mission 22 April 1944 everything went wrong, but it made most of the remaining missions relatively easy. Remember loss of close friends killed in action, flying in foul weather, and the seemingly ever-present anti-aircraft fire over enemy targets. When the weather was good and enemy activity minimal, a mission could be a good experience. Lasting friendships were formed out of the war-time experience. Perhaps among those who came out of the war without serious physical or psychological disability, many veterans were well-equipped to deal with the remainder of their lives."
After the war, Clifton received a doctorate from Texas A&M University and worked in the administration of the extension service from 1948.
Awards: DFC, AM(3OLC), WWII Victory, EAME.
