Object Number - UPL 22748 - 1st Lt Newell Anderson 338FS, 55FG, 8AF.

Assigned to 338FS, 55FG, 8AF USAAF. 20 combat missions. Credited 1 destroyed, 1 damaged and 1 probable air to air and 1 destroyed and 1 damaged [Ground]. Lost an engine on takeoff on a mission to Nuthampstead on 5-Feb-44 in P-38J 42-67917 and ran off the end of the runway. Returned to Duty (RTD). On 8-Apr-44, returning to base on one engine with drop tanks still onboard, having aborted from a bomber escort in P-38J 42-68085, Newell emerged from the overcast to land only to find two P-38's lined up on the runway. With full power to his good engine, Newell managed to avoid colliding with his colleagues, but crashed into a field. With one last display of heroism, Newell waved away a boy running to give assistance just before his aircraft exploded. 8-Apr-44. Killed in Action (KIA).
