Lt. Benjamin M. Hagan III enlisted in his hometown of Chattanooga, TN, on 28 March 1942. Assigned to the 368th Fighter Squadron in April 1943, on his 66th combat mission with the 359th Fighter Group, while attacking a train on 8 June 1944, Lt. Hagan was hit by flak. His P-51 caught fire, burning his face and right leg. After bailing out he was captured and hospitalized for a week, his burns having temporarily blinded him. He was liberated from Stalag 7-A on 27 April 1945.
