Shot down 11 November 1943 in B-17 #42-39812 'Casey Jones'. Killed in Action (KIA). The plane was last seen near Nijmegen, Holland. The navigator (John Thompson) on his plane bailed out and was captured by the Germans. Smith did not bail out of the plane. It was the Munster mission
