Johnny R. Enlow was Flight engineer/Top Turret gunner on the Warren Hawes Crew (Crew Number 18) in the 390th Bomb Group. He flew most missions with the Hawes crew on B-17 #42-31717 “HELLS BELLS”. In total, he flew 41 missions in two tours. He was shot down near the French border on his 41st mission. A German farmer hid him for almost two weeks till local enforcement stopped hounding the town for U.S. airmen possibly hiding or being hidden. He was taken to the French border then the underground delivered him to the coast where he was taken back to England. He then spent the rest of his 2nd tour as an engineer aboard a B-17G outfitted to ferry top officials around the safe zones of the war.

If anyone has any information that can be added it would be most welcome as we do not know what mission, aircraft or target . By his second tour he was mostly a relief engineer going up on any ship that needed one and he never really knew the name of the aircraft , pilots name or the target. Troy L. Enlow Seattle Wa.
