John Tadje's father Frederick, and grandfather Phillip were committed and faithful members of the Mormon church, early converts from Germany. Philip had emigrated to Salt Lake City with all of his children. Both Fred and Phil returned to Germany later as missionaries, with Fred presiding over the German mission. Philip, or "Vater Tadje" as he was known, died of a heart attack in 1939 while serving as a missionary under his son Fred's leadership. John was raised in Germany as a child and lived there until 1939.
