John W Affleck

Military

Shot down 31 December 1944 in A/C #43-38408, Hamburg, Prisoner of War (POW). Name of Plane was 'Faithful Forever'.

It was not the New Year's Eve Party John had planned, instead it was hard brown bread and ersatz coffee and jam at a Luftwaffe base. After the usual interrogation at Frankfurt the POWs were crowded into box cars and dispatched to Stalag Luft near Wetzlar. As the Russians advanced they were moved to the huge holding camp at Moosburg where - on April 29th 1945 American tanks broke open the camp gates and the German guards ran to the nearby woods.
