On Christmas Eve 1944 maximum effort mission to Darmstadt, we took a direct 88 mm. hit, knocking out #1 and #2 engines at battle lines. Dropped bombs on a trget of opportunity, jettisoned all possible equipment, ammo etc. , landing at RAF Manston, where we spent Christmas. Returned to base by rail on Dec. 26 in coldest weather England had seen in 40 years - snow and ice! Our Bombardier, Emanuel Agnello, was killed by flak on a January 1945 mission over Hamburg.
