In 1942, at eighteen years of age, J.C. joined the Army Air Force and received his wings in Las Vegas, Nevada. He then became a Staff Sergeant and crew member on a B-17G Flying Fortress. He arrived in England on February 27, 1944 and only eight days later, on his second mission (to bomb the VKF ball bearing works in Berlin/Erkner), he was killed in action on "The Flying Jenny", S/N 42-31595, March 6, 1944.
