B-24 Liberator #42-40795 'Golden Sandstorm' 565th BS, 389th BG, 8th AF, flew on 1st Aug 43 Ploesti oil refinery raid, returning to Libya.
Originally flown by the James Tolleson crew (shown above) on the Ploesti mission. Shot down 29th Jan 44 to Frankfurt while being flown by the Stan Podolak crew, with all taken 10 POW.

Took part in Operation Tidal Wave, the raid on Ploesti on 1 August 1943, flying B-24 Liberator 42-40795.
Went down on 7 Apr 45 in B-24 44-49533. They were Deputy Lead and the plane suffered major damage after being hit by a German fighter and the crew was unable to bail out. The 2 pilots (Tolleson and Kunkel) were cast out of the plane as it began to disintegrate. Tolleson became a Prisoner of War and released on 10/17/45
