"Iowans of the Mighty Eighth", Chapter 19 "Killed in Action", by Charles D Taylor

Object Number - UPL 21929 - Jack A Peck - Marshalltown, 92nd BG, KIA

Jack A. Peck was Killed in Action on the Meersberg raid.

This letter was sent home to his family:

'Dear Mrs Peck,

First Lieutenant Jack A. Peck was briefed for a mission to Meersberg, Germany on 13 September 1944. It was his 30th mission. At the target severe flak was encountered, and his ship sustained extensive battle damage. The waist gunner was killed and the tail gunner severely wounded. In spite of the damage to his plane, Jack was able to pilot his ship to an airfield near Liege, Belgium.

Endeavoring to land the crippled plane, he bounced into a high tension wire and crashed. Only two members of the crew are known to have escaped. The fate of the other crew members is unknown. The plane exploded soon after impact. No other information is available. We are enclosing the names and addresses of the two boys of Jack’s crew, who escaped.

May I express my deepest sympathies and extend the thoughts that we, of Jack’s Squadron, are most anxious to serve you in any way possible. Please do not hesitate to call on us if there is anything further we may do.'
