Ivan F Hunter

A farm implement mechanic he joined up September 9 1942, trained as a tail gunner and joined the Group at Thorpe Abbots in June 1944. Shot down on his 33rd mission, 10 November 1944 in A/C #42-102986, near Wiesbaden. Prisoner of War (POW). He was held at Stalag Luft 4 until being moved westward as the Russians advanced from the east; first to Nurnberg then walking some 150 kilometres - without any supplies en route, except the food they got by exchanging cigarettes etc with the locals - to Moosburg until liberated on 29th April, Ivan had lost some 50 lbs in weight. He afterwards went back to farming and was active in the 8thAF Historical Society and POW organizations.
