A P-47 Thunderbolt (UN-V, serial number 41-6325) of the 63rd Fighter Squadron, 56th Fighter Group prepares for take off at Horsham St. Faith, 16 March 1943. Passed for publication 16 Mar 1943. This is the first photograph to be taken in England of the new American high-altitude fast fighter, the P-47 or "Thunderbolt". Now in quantity production, its 2000 hp engine gives it a speed in excess of 400 mph. Eight guns in the wings give it a tremendous punch, and it has been reported that it was strong enough to stand up to the strain of a 750mph power-dive in trials. Vogt Junior, in the 63rd Fighter Squadron. On 26th January the aircraft was transferred to the 365th Fighter Group, a Ninth Air Force unit. Handwritten on slide:"16 MM"
