B-24 crew in front of their bomber, WW II. My uncle, George Painter, Jr., was the top turret gunner and navigator on this plane. He is standing, far left, with a small "X" placed over him...none of the other crew members are identified ... A family story tells of their bomber getting shot down over Italy, and of an old Italian farm woman hiding him in her barn and feeding him pasta noodles (one version of the story makes the noodles raw) for several days until he was rescued. How he got back to friendly forces, I never heard...
