IMAGEA P-38H Lightning aircraft serial number 42-67020, with "flying wolf" nose art. This particular design was adopted as a personal insignia by Major Milton Joel, Commanding Officer of the 38th Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group. Wearing the CG code of the 38th, the individual aircraft letter is as yet unknown. Handwritten on slide:"N3 1-26" The noseart was painted on by Sergeant Robert Sand, the same man who took the photograph. On 29th November 1943, eleven days after this photo was taken, the Major was shot down and the plane lost.
