According to my Grandfather Lt.Col Elmer L. Heap who piloted KWITCHABITCHIN #42-30431 the ship was damaged in a practice formation flight and deemed unsafe to land. So the crew bailed out after setting the ship on autopilot pointed towards the North Sea. KWITCHABITCHIN was later shot down by RAF Spitfires as it was circling over the North Sea.
