Nathan served as a 1st Lieutenant and Pilot on B-17 "Short Snorter III" (#42-5337), 401st Bomber Squadron, 91st Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He resided in Florida prior to the war. Nathan was declared "Missing In Action", along with eight other members of his crew, when his plane was shot down while on a mission to Schweinfurt, Germany to bomb a Ball Bearing Plant. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart. The 91st Bomber Group lost 11 B-17's on this mission.
