Lieutenant Elmer Nardi made the supreme sacrifice, according to latest word from the war department this week, on November 3. A telegram received by his sister Miss Georgina Nardi of San Francisco contained no details but in pait said he “died in action on November 3 over enemy territory.” It is believed he was engaged in a raid over Wilhelmshaven, Germany. In the early part of last month the war department had notified the family that he was missing in action. The lieutenant, who had been fearless in his activities over enemy Europe, having participated in over 20 missions, had received many citations. He had the air medal, the oak leaf cluster, and had been recommended for the distinguished flying cross. He was the son of G. Nardi and brother of Miss Georgina Nardi of San Francisco, Mrs. Reno Revel, Mrs. Francis Passalacqua, Chap Nardi of San Rafael, Gerge Nardi of Santa Rosa and Walter Nardi of Healdsburg. Lieutenant Nardi graduated from the local schools and in 1937 enrolled in the Santa Rosa Junior College, after which he attended Washington State College at Pullman, where he majored in forestry. He entered the Santa Ana school as air cadet and received his wings at Victorville. He later was stationed at several flying fields in preparation for overseas duty. He flew his own bomber, “The Screwball” with his own crew, to England.
